Pusher seals – The pusher type of the mechanical seals move axially along rotating sleeve or shaft so that contact is maintained with the seal faces. This feature helps compensate for wearing that could occur on the face of the seal and misalignment wobbling. These seals are commonly used and they are less expensive. Unbalanced seals – This type of mechanical seals is used in drastic conditions where shaft misalignment, vibrations and fluid cavitation problems are present. They allow less fluid leakage and are very stable yet inexpensive. They are, however seals designed for low pressure ranges and too much fluid force could interfere with a lubricating film between face and seal will fail.
Conventional seals – They are simple seals that need to be set and aligned on sleeves or pump shaft.
Non-pusher seals – Unlike the pusher mechanical seals, they do not need to be moved axially to maintain face contact. They are great for low pressure and also high pressure applications, but there is a need to upgrade bellows when working under environments that are corrosive.
Balanced seals – They are able to sustain high pressures on faces and they do not generate much heat. For this reason they are suitable for liquids that have low lubricating capacity or high vapor pressure hydrocarbons.
Cartridge seals – Their main advantage is ease of installation, especially when compared with conventional seals. Seal setting errors are greatly reduced and this also reduces maintenance required for the seals.
